Every UK company must have a registered office address. It is the official address published on the Companies House register and visible to anyone who searches for your company.
What Is It?
The registered office is where official communications from Companies House, HMRC and the courts are sent. It appears on all filings, your website and business letters. Must be a physical address in the same jurisdiction as the company registration.
Using Your Home Address
Many directors do this initially. Downsides:
- Privacy — permanently visible on the public register, even after changing. Check any company on BizLookup to see historical addresses.
- Junk mail — marketing companies scrape the register
- Lease restrictions — some landlords prohibit business use
- Professional image — residential addresses look less professional
Virtual Office Services
For £50-150/year you get a professional business address, mail forwarding or scanning, privacy for your home address and full compliance. Some providers also offer a director service address.
Changing Your Address
File form AD01 with Companies House. Online filing is free and takes effect immediately. You cannot move between jurisdictions (England to Scotland) without re-registration.
Legal Requirements
- Must be a physical address (not a PO Box)
- Must be in the same jurisdiction as the registration
- Someone must receive post during business hours
- Company name must be displayed (or virtual office confirms mail acceptance)
